What is the value of an idea?
The currency of the creative world is ideas. Ideas cost time and resources to generate. Ideas can be hugely valuable.
How are ideas protected?
There is no specific way to protect ideas per se - other than to keep them secret. The inevitable consequence of this is that ideas can be and regularly are stolen. An important exception is for ideas that are entirely new, inventive and can be applied industrially. In such cases, you may be able to apply to the Patent Office for a ‘patent’ which could give you a monopoly for 20 years for your invention.
How are ideas stolen?
Ideas can be easy to steal. By telling other people your secrets without obliging them to keep them secret, they may be legally entitled to use your ideas without your consent.
Why worry?
Globalisation, the internet and new technology all mean that the value of a single good idea can be enormous. This raises the stakes and means that there is every incentive for other people to use your ideas without permission, rather than pay you usage rights.
